Does God care about the Super Bowl?

Does God care about the Super Bowl?

Doesn’t He have more important things to be worried about? by Rabbi Joshua Hess Does God care who wins the Super Bowl? It's a question that has been asked numerous times in sports and in other areas of life generally considered unimportant. There's no denying that the Super Bowl, with its half-time show and million dollar commercials, commands a tremendous amount of attention, unequaled by any other sporting event. In 1985, the public celebration of Ronald Reagan's inauguration was shifted from the constitutionally required day of January 20, a Sunday, to the following day, Monday, so as not to conflict…

Symbolism of the Shofar

Symbolism of the Shofar

by Rabbi Shraga Simmons Is the quintessential symbol of Rosh Hashanah more than just a primitive trumpet? During the blowing of the shofar on Rosh Hashana, notice there are three distinct sounds: Tekiah ― one long, straight blast Shevarim ― three medium, wailing sounds Teruah ― 9 quick blasts in short succession Let's examine each of these shofar sounds, and see how they relate to the different themes of Rosh Hashana.

Morgan Freeman says he’s God

Morgan Freeman says he’s God

By Dr. Jim Denison, President Morgan Freeman is one of my favorite actors. Winner of an Academy Award, a Golden Globe, and a Screen Actors Guild Award, he is one of the most popular actors of our time. It turns out he's even more significant—at least in his own mind. In a recent interview, Freeman was asked, "Do you think there is a God?" His answer: "Do I think there's a God? Um (pause) yeah." "You paused," the interviewer noted. "I paused because I am God." "Because every man is created in God's image," the interviewer replied. Freeman: "Yes or…

How to jumpstart your personal exodus.

How to jumpstart your personal exodus.

Shimon E., a 16-year-old Israeli Shotokan karate champion, was in Philadelphia with eleven other Israeli boys for his first international competition. He had trained long and hard, but eying his opponents, especially the Japanese contingent, he felt daunted. The Japanese contenders seemed to have karate in their blood. What did he have in his blood? Suddenly it hit him: He had not seen any of the contenders pray. Although Shimon was not religious, he intuited that he should ask God for help. At the beginning of each match, he prayed for Divine assistance. Shimon scored victory after victory; by the…

How to Make a Yom Kippur Breakthrough

How to Make a Yom Kippur Breakthrough

by Azriel Friedman 3 practical steps to becoming great. Did you ever have a waiter with a big fake smile? Your reaction may have been: "This guy has no interest in serving me. I'm only tipping him the minimum." I used to show up on Yom Kippur acting like that waiter. I was willing to play nice. But really I couldn't wait to get out of shul, and on with my life. God was probably not thrilled with my service. The first step to preparing for Yom Kippur is to know that God is interested in you exactly as you…

Preparing for Rosh Hashana

Preparing for Rosh Hashana

I have always felt Rosh Hashana to be somewhat confusing. Solemn, yet celebratory. Stirring, yet scary. Inspiring, but rather intimidating. But there is one facet of this holy day that is as clear as the clarion call of the shofar itself - it is a day of opportunity for closeness to God. Some find it through introspection, others through meditation. For some, prayer is the medium of choice, while for others it is the shofar blasts that pierce through the curtains of the mundane. But for many of us, the closeness never really comes and the disappointment is palpable. The…

Cemetery where ‘God’ banned accused of discrimination

'We're going to declare these policies unconstitutional' By Michael Carl Houston National Cemetery A pastor and family members of deceased veterans have filed a federal lawsuit alleging that the Houston National VA Cemetery is discriminating against their religious freedoms after the cemetery administrator banned using God's name in memorial services. God removes a remnant before judgment

God removes a remnant before judgment

By Chuck Baldwin Let's settle one thing first: God has never used a majority to achieve anything substantive or revolutionary. It has always been a tireless, committed, and courageous remnant that He has used to accomplish things considered noteworthy and lasting. Any dead fish can swim downstream! Christ used a handful of apostles to turn the world upside down. In Jewish history, it was Gideon's 300, David's 300, Nehemiah's remnant, and small bands of men here and there that God used to defeat mighty enemies and raise the banner of victory. In our own history, the men who fought against…
