Power Grid is “Particularly Vulnerable to Bad Space Weather”
For many it’s either tin foil conspiracy theory or an action packed Hollywood Armageddon flick. For the National Aeronautics and Space Administration it’s a serious threat, with the potential to wipe out the technologically driven lives we’ve become so used to.
Our sun is approaching a period of high turbulence, referred to as the solar maximum, with many scientists suggesting a peak in activity around 2013. The cycle occurs every 11 years, and the next time around it is predicted to be one of the weakest in decades. However, some contrary opinions hold that the next solar maximum may be stronger than we expect, citing a 26,000 year galactic alignment cycle, scheduled to occur on or around 2012, eerily coinciding with the end of the Mayan calendar.
One organization that isn’t taking any chances is NASA. As the sun begins to awaken, scientists are keeping a close eye on space weather:
City insiders yesterday speculated that the “death warrant” for the euro had already been written By Macer Hall PREPARATIONS were under way last night for the break-up of the euro as Europe’s debt crisis spiralled out of control.
As Treasury officials worked through the night to soften the impact on Britain, David Cameron warned that the single European currency was facing its “moment of truth”.
Business Secretary Vince Cable went further and spoke about “Armageddon” while Brussels officials warned that the chaos threatened to plunge us all into a new recession.
Ministers are understood to be deeply concerned that French President Nicolas Sarkozy and Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel are secretly plotting to build a new, slimmed down eurozone without Greece, Italy and other debt-ridden southern Euro- pean nations.
In the Hollywood film Armageddon, Bruce Willis and a roughneck band of oil-rig workers were sent to destroy an asteroid on a deadly collision course with Earth. The catastrophic scenes depicted in the film just may be less fiction…and more science reality; especially the rover-craft carried by the Space Shuttles, which were used for surface navigation. However, the rover used in the movie may have been light on imagination. Scientists at NASA are focused on the development of high-tech and rugged gear to assist the intrepid asteroid cowboys. To simulate the asteroid environment, the D-RATS (short for Desert Training Research and Technology Studies) are training in the Arizona desert.
Even among astronauts there are individuals whose imaginations and uber-adventuring souls go beyond human limits. In space, they’re called D-RATS, short for Desert Research and Technology Studies. If the thought of landing on an asteroid is your idea of a good time, NASA may have a job for you. Just like in the movie, asteroid hunting promised to be a hazardous occupation. In addition to the challenges of real-time communications, zero oxygen and the highly radioactive environment of space, asteroids have virtually no gravity.
Nature’s most valuable workers mysteriously vanishing out of thin air
“IAPV was initially identified in honeybee colonies in Israel in 2002, where the honeybees exhibited unusual behavior, such as twitching wings outside the hive and a loss of worker-bee populations.”
What is devastating the world’s honeybees?
Talk about a biblical reference. Greenpeace and World March activists staged a “die-in” to protest nuclear weapons at Mount Megiddo on Wednesday.Megiddo, according to Judeo-Christian sources, will be the place where good and evil slug it out at the end of days. The term Armageddon is derived from the place name.
