Before the Lights Go Out: A Survey of EMP Preparedness Reveals Significant ShortfallsBy James Jay Carafano, Ph.D. , Baker Spring and Richard Weitz, Ph.D.

Abstract: An electromagnetic pulse (EMP) over the United States could end modern life in America overnight. Whether caused by an enemy attack (a nuclear device detonated above the atmosphere) or by a natural phenomenon (a geomagnetic storm), an EMP can cause entire regions of the country to lose electricity—permanently. Despite the EMP Commission’s recommendations in 2004 and 2008, hardly any progress has been made in protecting the country from an EMP attack and its catastrophic results. The U.S. must prepare to deal with an EMP—now.

While the ability of an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) to inflict catastrophic damage on U.S. infrastructure has been a known fact for decades, insufficient efforts have been taken to mitigate the threat. A survey of congressional, federal, state, local, and international measures to deal with the threat reveals more complacency than action.

In order to prevent the catastrophic destruction that could result from either a nuclear missile detonated at high altitudes or intense solar eruptions that send blasts of radiation towards the Earth, initiatives are needed at all levels—from bilateral partnerships that focus on shared infrastructure to national leadership to state and local action.

Why Worry?

In July 1962, a high-altitude nuclear test dubbed Operation Starfish, conducted 400 kilometers above Johnson Island in the Pacific Ocean, first raised widespread concerns over electromagnetic pulses. During the course of the test, the recording instruments continually malfunctioned and affected electrical equipment more than 1,400 kilometers away in Hawaii.[1] The root cause of the problem? An electromagnetic pulse. This discovery led the U.S. military to harden many of the country’s strategic defense systems, such as missile silos, against EMP effects, but little was done to implement measures to protect civilian infrastructure. That practice has remained virtually unchanged despite the ever-increasing proliferation of nuclear weapons and ever-increasing U.S. military and civilian dependence on electricity-based infrastructure.

American Exceptionalism

by Paul Eidelberg

30ShareAmerican Exceptionalism begins with the fifty-six extraordinary men who signed the Declaration of Independence. On this Fourth of July it is only fitting that we discuss the character of these men lest they be confused with the revolutionaries of other countries.

Thomas Jefferson, the principal but not sole author of the Declaration, spoke famously of a natural aristoi. On October 28, 1813, in response to a letter from John Adams, Jefferson agreed with his old friend that there is a natural aristocracy among men founded on virtue and talents:

This natural aristocracy I consider as the most precious gift of nature, for the instruction, the trusts, and government of society. And indeed, it would have been inconsistent in creation to have formed men for the social state, and not to have provided virtue and wisdom enough to manage the concerns of society. May we not even say that that form of government is best, which provides the most effectually for a pure selection of these natural aristoi into the offices of government?i

It is time for Israel to rethink US aide

Avi Yesawich, Daniel Nisman

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s awkward recognition of American aid portrays Israel as a privileged offspring instead of a true and loyal friend.

Presumably during his recent speech at the US Congress, Bibi intended to be humble when he generously thanked America for its unwavering economic support. However, the entire event unfolded drastically differently in front of our own eyes: The leader of our great nation made a gesture of submissiveness to our American friends, underscoring the notion that the US-Israel relationship, while special, it is not based on the idea of equality among peers.

Former Hitler Youth gives chilling but life-saving warning to America

Because it has abandoned moral absolutes and its historic Christian faith, the U.S. is moving closer to a Nazi-style totalitarianism, warns a former German member of the Hitler Youth. And today only, WND readers can get Hilmar von Campe’s acclaimed book, “Defeating the Totalitarian Lie: A Former Hitler Youth Warns America,”

“Every day brings this nation closer to a Nazi-style totalitarian abyss,” writes von Campe, now a U.S. citizen, and founder of the national Institute for Truth and Freedom to fight for a return to constitutional government in the U.S. – the key, he believes, to keeping America free.

“I lived the Nazi nightmare, and, as the old saying goes, ‘A man with an experience is never at the mercy of a man with an argument,'” writes von Campe. “Everything I write is based on my personal experience in Nazi Germany. There is nothing theoretical about my description of what happens when a nation throws God out of government and society, and Christians become religious bystanders. I don’t want to see a repetition. The role of God in human society is the decisive issue for this generation. My writing is part of my life of restitution for the crimes of a godless government, of the evil of which I was a part.”

US Congress sides with Netanyahu over Obama

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech before the US Congress on Tuesday was seen by most Israelis as a resounding success, and as a rejection of President Barack Obama’s policy speeches over the previous few days.

Speaking before a joint gathering of the House of Representatives and Senate, Netanyahu reiterated that Israel will not return to its 1967 borders, as Obama had insisted it must do for the sake of peace. The Israeli leader also adamantly restated Israel’s position that Jerusalem must not be divided.

Netanyahu’s strong statements won no fewer than 29 rounds of applause (26 of them standing ovations) from the lawmakers, despite the fact that he was seen to be defying the Americans’ own president.

Writing for Foreign Policy Magazine, analyst Michael Cohen noted that “the idea that Congress would openly side with a foreign leader against the president of the United States seems too far-fetched to believe. Remarkably, however, something not dissimilar happened in Washington Tuesday.”

Rep. Gohmert takes on Eric Holder

Watch this explosive video of Rep. Louie Gohmert questioning Attorney General Eric Holder during a House Justice Department oversight meeting last week.

Rep. Gohmert takes the Attorney General to task regarding Holder’s failure to pursue further indictments against organizations like ISNA and CAIR in the Holy Land Foundation terror finance trial of 2008.

Rep. Gohmert is a former chief justice of the 12th Court of Appeals in Texas and a rising star within the overall movement that is resisting the rise of radical Islam. He is one of the Members of Congress we have invited to speak at the legislative briefing portion of our national conference.

His boldness and clarity in confronting the spread of the Muslim Brotherhood’s influence in America is a refreshing change among the elected ranks in Washington and is why we at ACT! for America have invited him to speak at our legislative briefing

China spies, America’s new threat

The young man stood before the judge, his usually neatly trimmed hair now long enough to brush the collar of his prison jumpsuit. Glenn Duffie Shriver had confessed his transgressions and was here, in a federal courtroom with his mother watching, to receive his sentence and to try, somehow, to explain it all.

When the time came for him to address the court, he spoke of the many dreams he’d had to work on behalf of his country.

“Mine was to be a life of service,” he said. “I could have been very valuable. That was originally my plan.”

Such descriptions make the one that culminated in the courtroom all the more baffling: Glenn Shriver was also a spy recruit for China. He took $70,000 from individuals he knew to be Chinese intelligence officers to try to land a job with a U.S. government agency — first the State Department and later the CIA.

Islamic flood coming to U.S.?

“i’m sure you’ve heard many times that Washington, DC, is now flooded with Muslims in very high positions in the U.S. administration, and these Muslims already control the gates,” notes Avi Lipkin, an Israeli scholar and author who has traveled throughout the U.S. to warn Americans about the threat of Islam. “The floodgates are open. The Muslims are coming in in tremendous numbers into the U.S.”

An Israeli author and expert on the Middle East is warning Americans that Islamic immigrants could possibly flood the U.S. as a result of the events taking place in Egypt.

Israel National News recently reported that the Obama administration has decided to allow Islamic professor Tariq Ramadan to enter the United States. Ramadan, an Egyptian who currently lives in Switzerland, is a leading member of Europe’s Muslim Brotherhood branch and is the grandson of the movement’s founder. He was invited to teach at the University of Notre Dame in 2004, but the Bush administration revoked his visa because of donations he made to a blacklisted charity.

However, the Obama administration has now decided to lift the ban and possibly allow Ramadan and Adam Habib, another Muslim professor, onto U.S. soil.
