View Article  Chief Rabbinate Nixes Christian-Jewish Conference

by Hillel Fendel-(IsraelNN.com) The Chief Rabbinate has banned participation in the Bridges for Peace women's conference scheduled for next week in Jerusalem. Participation in the "Woman to Woman" Conference in Jerusalem next week, sponsored by the Christian "Bridges for Peace" organization, has been banned by the Chief Rabbinate of Israel. The event is set to coincide with the celebrations commemorating the 40th anniversary of Jerusalem's re-unification in the Six Day War. A special Rabbinate committee, headed by Rabbi Simcha Kook of Rechovot, ruled on Thursday that concentration on "Judeo-Christian values" and the study of "the Jewish foundations of Christianity" are forbidden. The rabbis ruled that these efforts are actually part of a long-running campaign to bring Israeli-Jews to believe in Jesus. Promotional literature for the Woman to Woman conference, to take place in Jerusalem from May 16-19, describes it as "Jewish and Christian women together, studying the Word  [italics added] and working together to build bonds of friendship and bring comfort to the people of Israel." Each Conference day will begin with "praise and worship... in preparation for an exciting series of visits and speakers, focusing on the roles, experiences, and opportunities for Women in Israel." View Article  American company to invest $50 million in Israeli oil well

Shire International signs binding letter of intent to invest in Givot Olam's Meged Israeli oil drilling project Givot Olam Oil Ltd., an Israeli petroleum exploration company, has signed a binding letter of intent with Shire International Ltd. who will invest in Givot Olam's Meged project. In the first stage of the project, Shire will invest $50 million for five wells (including the Meged 5 well). In the second stage, development of the Meged field will continue until drilling and production are completed. The two companies will operate the project jointly. Interaction between the two companies began with a meeting between Lou Shire, president of Shire International, and geologist Tovia Luskin from Givot Olam at an petroleum expoloration conference. Shire specializes in horizontal drilling that, according to experts, is the most efficient method for the reservoir discovered in the Meged field.
Givot Olam is the only company that is licensed in Israel for oil drilling after it was described as a "commercial discovery." The new technology makes oil production profitable. Every year, 30,000 horizontal drilling projects take place in USA and Canada. Findings from Meged confirm the existence of an oil field spanning over 200 square kilometers (50,000 acres).

View Article  SARKOZY WINS DRAMATIC ELECTION IN FRANCE

So who is he really and will he be good for the U.S.? By Joel C. Rosenberg - (Washington, D.C., May 7, 2007) -- This is a year of dramatic political changes in Europe that bear close watching. Britain's Tony Blair will soon step down, making way for Labour leader Gordon Brown, currently the Chancellor of the Exchequer, to take over as Prime Minister on July 2. Brown will eventually face conservative Tory leader David Cameron in a battle for Britain's future. On July 22, Turkey will hold major elections that could end in pro-Iranian and pro-Russian Islamic fundamentalists in charge of what has been a U.S.-friendly secular government. But the biggest news so far comes from France, where center-right presidential candidate Nicholas Sarkozy has just defeated the socialist Segolene Royal, 53% to 47% in a fiercely-contested runoff. So who is Nicolas Sarkozy and wha t kind of President will he be? At a youthful and energetic 52, he is widely seen as more pro-American than his predecessor, the out-going 74-year old Jacques Chirac. Royal last week accused Sarkozy of being a "dangerous choice" who would threaten democracy and could spark a civil war. Worse, Royal compared Sarkozy to President Bush, ...   more »

View Article  Gaza rockets pound Sderot

Gaza-based Palestinian rocket crews pounded the southern Israel town of Sderot Sunday afternoon and Monday morning, leaving two people moderately wounded and many others suffering from shock. On Sunday afternoon, three rockets hit the working-class town, one of them landing just a few feet from a local gas station. A 24-year-old gas station attendant was evacuated to a nearby hospital after shrapnel from the rocket pierced several parts of his body. Another man had his hearing impaired by the blast. Early on Monday morning, another rocket struck a house adjacent to a kindergarten in Sderot. The attack occurred as children were making their way to the facility. Damage was caused to both the house and the kindergarten, but, miraculously, there were no physical injuries. At least four people, however, were treated for shock, including a woman who lost consciousness. Israel Defense Forces (IDF) officials told Ynet that Israel's military policy in the area may soon be altered. "The way things look now, we may have to increase activity (in the Gaza Strip) very soon ... no more sitting around," said one official. Over the weekend, unnamed IDF officials who spoke to the Yisraeli daily newspaper complained that while the army ...   more »

View Article  US dollar plummets below NIS 4.00

The US dollar dropped below the four-shekel mark on Monday for the first time in seven years, closing at NIS 3.998. At the end of April, the dollar teetered on the edge of NIS 4.00, with analysts predicting it might go lower. In a recent report, Morgan Stanley argued that Israel's strong macroeconomic data and structural shifts in the balance of payments had been the main parameters driving the shekel's continued sharp advance, more so than the dollar weakness around the world. Similarly, the Bank of Israel has been stressing that the current account surplus widening to $6.8 billion and foreign investment reaching a record of $21.2b. have been supporting the shekel in recent months. Since October last year, the Bank of Israel has been cutting interest rates, but the cuts have not succeeded in weakening the currency. The Central Bank would like to see the shekel weaker against the dollar, as a low dollar keeps inflation under the government's target range, which is between 1% to 3%. Last year, the Central Bank missed that target widely, when inflation ran at minus 0.1% and this year the Central Bank was planning to bring inflation back into the price target range ...   more »

Crucial questions remain unanswered in face of imminent threats
Guy Bechor
While Israeli society is busy as usual with internal battles, cruelly tearing off limbs regarding the past and with self hate whose origins are hard to fathom, the imminent threats are clearly visible. Yet through astounding blindness they are not being discussed in the public discourse. The Iranian deputy interior minister is explicitly warning Israel that in the event of an American attack, Iran would fire tens of thousands of missiles at Israel; Syria is moving and positioning thousands of missiles close to the border with Israel; Hizbullah has completed the deployment of its missiles and rockets arsenal, which is capable of striking at the heart of the country and Hamas has transferred tons of explosives and missiles into the Gaza Strip in an attempt to create a balance of power. Even the timetable is clear: Somewhere in August - then the US will have to decide whether it will launch a large-scale military assault against Iran or not, and this is when Iran is likely to activate its regional satellites. But here we are continuing to squabble about nonsensical matters. The Winograd Commission could first and foremost be ...   more »

View Article  It's All In The Timing...
     I'm a reasonable sort of guy...really.
I'm all for logic, exchange of ideas, and so forth. In fact, I'm often accused of being too loquacious...if you know what I mean (my publishers certainly do).
Secretary of State Dr. Condoleezza Rice was at Sharm el-Sheikh on May 3rd attending an international what-to-do-about-Iraq conference. The Syrians have been pressing for better ties with the United States--ties soured due to their murderous shenanigans in Lebanon and Iraq contrary to Washington's desires.
Notice I left out their actions involving Israel. Not an accident...
Secretary Rice met with her Syrian counterpart, Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem, the first high-level contact in a few years. This marked a turnaround from the previous approach which required a change in Syrian behavior first.
While this was recommended earlier by the Baker-Hamilton Commission (see http://www.britanniaradio.co.uk/?q=node/375 ), it had largely been placed by the Bush administration onto the backburner until a marked change in Syrian behavior was forthcoming.
The Syrians or their local stooges have been eliminating one Lebanese leader and patriot after another who dared oppose Damascus's vision of Lebanon as being merely its western province. Additionally, good evidence points to Syria ...   more »
View Article  Netanyahu is Preferred Prime Minister in Israel
Angus Reid Global Monitor) - One-in-four Israelis would pick Benjamin Netanyahu as their head of government, according to a poll by Dialog released by Haaretz. 26 per cent of respondents would like the Likud leader to become prime minister again.
Shimon Peres of the Kadima party is second with 11 per cent, followed by fellow party member and current foreign affairs minister Tzipi Livni with 10 per cent, former prime minister Ehud Barak of the Labour party with six per cent, current prime minister Ehud Olmert also with six per cent, and Labour’s Ami Ayalon with five per cent.
In March 2006, Israeli voters renewed the Knesset. Kadima, founded by former prime minister Ariel Sharon and led by Olmert, secured 29 seats. Labour, the Retired People’s Party (Gil) and the International Organization of Torah-observant Sephardic Jews (Shas) joined Kadima in a coalition. In October, the Israeli cabinet approved the addition of Israel Our Home to the government. Olmert’s coalition now has the support of 78 of the Knesset’s 120 members.
A preview of the so-called Winograd Report—which looked into Israel’s handling of last year’s conflict with Lebanon-based Hezbollah—was released on Apr. 30. The document, drafted by a special commission appointed ...   more »
View Article  Jihad coming to the streets of America
3 May 2007: In the HQ INTEL-ALERT Private Intelligence Report issued on February 4, 2007, we reported extensively about Muslim men inside the U.S., adhering to the Islamist ideology of jihad, preparing for war on the streets of America. The “insider” reports are very troubling and are purposely being downplayed by official sources and go largely unreported in the media. One case, however, can serve as an example of what is taking place all across the U.S. involving the procurement and disbursement of weapons to Muslim "jihadists." On Tuesday, May 2, 2007, a federal indictment was unsealed in the U.S. federal court in St. Louis naming eight Islamic men as defendants in a case involving the buying, selling or hiding of automatic weapons, an anti-personnel mine and other explosives.
Defendant Thaer Abde SUMAD, 23"We're going to war"
The case originated with the arrest of Mousa M. ABUELAWI, 22, of Creve Coeur, MO on December 29, 2006. He was charged with three counts of illegal possession or distribution of a machine gun and conspiracy to violate machine gun statutes. A superseding indictment unsealed yesterday, charges ABUELAWI and seven others with machine gun charges and charges of conspiracy, lying to the FBI ...   more »
View Article  Bodyguards, not altar boys, flank pro-marriage cleric
Archbishop Angelo Bagnasco no longer celebrates Mass in the cathedral of Genoa, Italy, with assistance from altar boys or deacons – not since the death threats began after he spoke out against government plans to legalize same-sex unions.
Bagnasco, recently appointed head of Italy's Conference of Bishops, stirred controversy last month when the group issued a statement directed at Catholic lawmakers, reminding them of their moral obligation to oppose the move toward mainstreaming homosexuality.
In the statement, Bagnasco made a "slippery-slope" case for what could go wrong in Italian society if the Church's moral position was not upheld.
"Why say ‘No’ to forms of legally recognized cohabitation which create alternatives to the family? Why say ‘No’ to incest? Why say ‘No’ to the pedophile party in Holland?” he asked.
Following the comments, threatening messages – "Shame on you, Bagnasco" and "Death to Bagnasco" – signed with the five-pointed star of the Red Brigades terror group were painted on the walls in the city, including those of the cathedral.
The Red Brigades, very active in the 1970s, have assassinated several senior Italian public figures in recent years. Fifteen alleged members of the communist organization's members were arrested and jailed three months ...   more »
View Article  Hate Crimes Bill May Threaten Free Speech
By David Brody
CWNews.com–-A controversial "hate crimes" bill in the U.S. is one step closer to becoming the law of the land.
The bill has passed the U.S. House of Representatives and will now head the Senate to be voted on. Some say the bill would create "thought crimes" and lay the groundwork to criminalize certain Christian beliefs.
"As a minister of the Gospel, I cannot support the naturalizing of homosexuality," Pastor Marvin Williams in Detroit, Mich., said.
But could speaking out against it put you in jail?
That's a concern over the Hate Crimes Prevention Act. If passed, sexual orientation would become a protected class of people under existing hate crimes law. It would also allow the federal government to help local officers in prosecuting hate crimes.
"We would feel safer on the streets and we would in fact be safer if hate criminals knew that the full power of the federal government was behind prosecuting them if they perpetrate these crimes," Harry Knox with the Human Rights Campaign said.
In 2005, there were 7,160 hate crime incidents. Fifty-five percent were based on race, 17 percent on religion, and 14 percent on sexual orientation.
Some point to the murder ...   more »
View Article  Anti-God Starbucks cup has customer steaming
An Ohio woman is steaming after reading an anti-God message published on the side of a Starbucks coffee cup.
The message that got Michelle Incanno's blood boiling reads:
"Why in moments of crisis do we ask God for strength and help? As cognitive beings, why would we ask something that may well be a figment of our imaginations for guidance? Why not search inside ourselves for the power to overcome? After all, we are strong enough to cause most of the catastrophes we need to endure."
Michelle Incanno of Springboro, Ohio, holds a cup part of Starbucks' 'The Way I See It' campaign (Dayton Daily News)
The quote was written by Bill Schell, a Starbucks customer from London, Ontario, Canada, and was included as part of an effort by the Seattle-based coffee giant to collect different viewpoints and spur discussion.
"As someone who loves God, I was so offended by that," Michelle Incanno, a married mother of three who is Catholic, told the Dayton Daily News. "I don't think there needs to be religious dialogue on it. I just want coffee."
Incanno of Springboro, Ohio, admits she had been a huge fan of Starbucks before discovering the message, always ordering ...   more »
View Article  AMERICAN EXPRESS ADDRESSES RFID PEOPLE TRACKING PLANS
Promises Full Patent Review, Tracking Notice, and Chip-Free Option
The top brass at American Express, chagrined at the discovery of its people tracking plans, met with CASPIAN (Consumers Against Supermarket Privacy Invasion and Numbering) last week to discuss the issue. One outcome of the meeting was a promise by American Express to review its entire patent portfolio and ensure that any people-tracking plans be accompanied by language requiring consumer notice and consent.
The meeting was organized after CASPIAN called attention to one of the company's more troublesome patent applications. That patent application, titled "Method and System for Facilitating a Shopping Experience," describes a Minority Report style blueprint for monitoring consumers through RFID-enabled objects, like the American Express Blue Card.
According to the patent, RFID readers called "consumer trackers" would be placed in store shelving to pick up "consumer identification signals" emitted by RFID-embedded objects carried by shoppers. These would be used to identify people, track their movements, and observe their behavior.
The patent also suggested such people-tracking systems could "be located in a common area of a school, shopping center, bus station or other place of public accommodation."
Allegations of American Express people-tracking blueprints first came to light at a ...   more »
