When you mention Israel, top quality wine is generally not the first thing that comes to people's minds. Yet, a short ride from Jerusalem in the scenic Judean Hills, resides one of Israel's best kept secrets: a world class winery. The Domaine du Castel winery located in Moshav Ramat Raziel is easy to miss. However, in this small family-run business, some of the world's best wines are produced in the same hills in which wine was produced in Biblical times. Wine has been grown in the land of Israel for thousands of years. The Bible often refers to the abundant wine harvests of Israel. Baron de Rothschild created the modern Israeli wine industry in the late nineteenth century, opening up two wineries in Zichron Ya'akov and Rishon Lezion. Today the country plays host to 150 wineries of all sizes producing wines of all tastes and prices. The Domaine du Castel winery, named after a Crusader fortress located nearby in the Judean Hills, was founded by Eli Ben-Zaken in 1988. Ben-Zaken, born in Egypt of Egyptian and Italian parents, was raised in Italy and England. In 1970, after a short stint in Israel volunteering during the Six Day War, he emigrated ... more »

By David Brinn March 04, 2007Melanoma is the least common but the most deadly skin cancer, accounting for only about 4% of all cases, but 79% of skin cancer deaths in the United States. Current therapies are only moderately effective with response rates in the 10% to 20% range, and with severe side effects. But an Israeli company thinks it has developed a safe, novel therapy to target metastatic melanoma patients with Stage III and IV melanoma that will cut down the disease and prevent its spread. GammaCan's innovative approach to treating cancer and other diseases is based on using intravenous immunoglobulin (IgG), a safe, non-toxic human plasma-based derived product that can be administered repeatedly. IgG works by strengthening the patient's immune system, and many medical experts view immunotherapy as a future alternative to today's standard chemotherapy. Over the last two decades, IgG-based therapies have been approved for the treatment of a number of immune deficiencies and autoimmune diseases. But according to the company's CEO Patrick Schnegelsberg, GammaCan is the first to use IgG to treat cancer. But he adds that what makes GammaCan's therapy called VitiGam so unique and effective is precisely its difference from standard IgGs. Instead of ... more »

The United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's fourth and latest report on the state of scientific knowledge on global warming concluded that human activity – primarily increased greenhouse gas concentrations due to fossil-fuel burning – is "very likely" responsible for the overall increase in global surface temperatures. Right after the report was released, Arctic temperatures plunged most of the northern hemisphere into a deep freeze. Upstate New York is still digging out from a snowstorm that dumped as much as 10 feet of snow in a matter of days. Sub-freezing temperatures were recorded from Southern California to Southern Florida, destroying as much as 80 percent of the citrus fruit in the affected areas.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's office denied reports Sunday that the leader had expressed support for the Saudi Peace Initiative during talks Saturday's talks in Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia's official news agency reported early Sunday that the Iranian president had expressed support for a 2002 Arab peace initiative during talks with Saudi officials. Under the peace plan, adopted in 2002 at the Arab summit in Beirut, Arab countries would normalize relations with Israel in exchange for its withdrawal from Arab lands captured in the 1967 war. Analysis: What actually happened in Riyadh?Livni to meet top US official on Iran Iran's official Islamic Republic News Agency, in a report carrying statements by Ahmadinejad on his return to Iran late Saturday following talks with King Abdullah in Saudi Arabia, did not mention the initiative. The Saudi Press Agency reported early Sunday that Ahmadinejad had said during talks that he was in favor of the plan. The report did not say how the agency had learned of this. The report followed official talks between the two countries, during which Saudi Arabia Iranian and Saudi leaders pledged to fight the spread of sectarian strife in the Middle East, which they said was the biggest danger ... more »

Russia's air force would be capable of easily knocking out missile defense sites the United States wants to place in Europe, news agencies quoted a top general as saying in the latest bellicose remarks in response to the US plans. Lt. -Gen. Igor Khvorov, who is in charge of Russia's strategic bomber force, said the installations the United States plans to deploy in Poland and the Czech Republic will be an easy target for his aircraft, Interfax and RIA-Novosti news agencies reported. "Since missile defense elements are weakly protected, all types of our aircraft are capable of applying electronic countermeasures against them or physically destroying them," Khvorov was quoted as saying. The statement follows a stream of other comments from Russian government leaders and military officials who have harshly criticized the US plans. The head of Russia's missile forces said last month that his forces would be capable of targeting the putative facilities if the country's leadership decided to do so

Somark is a technology company that is developing a proprietary ID system based on a biocompatible ink tattoo with chipless RFID functionality. When applied, the ink creates a unique ID that can be detected without line of sight. The technology will be initially leveraged to the livestock industry to help identify/track cattle and thus mitigate export trade loss from BSE (a.k.a. Mad Cow Disease) scares. Secondary target markets include laboratory animals, companion pets, and potentially prime cuts of meat. Original Source Prophecy & The news vdeo on the mark more »

A letter to my grandmother. Dearest Bubby, It has been almost a month since you passed away. I re-play the day of your surgery in my mind all the time. You were expected to recover, your heart as good as new. But that was not meant to be, Bubby. We thought we had more time with you. We thought that there would be plenty of opportunities for all the visits, all the trips, all the hugs and all the kisses that we meant to bestow on you in the future. We're sorry, Bubby. I think about you every day. I wish I had thought about you more earlier. I bought you a beautiful birthday card for your 75th birthday next month. Now I can not send it to you. It is sitting in my draw. I wish that I had not waited for an occasion to send a special card to you. I wish I had taken more time to hear about your experiences in the Concentration Camps. I know that you didn't like to talk about it. Yet despite this, you agreed to be interviewed by the Shoah Foundation so that we would have your testimony ... more » |
