View Article  Survivors invite Iranian pres. to Auschwitz, ask for Tehran invite

By Amiram Barkat, Haaretz Correspondent

Holocaust survivors on Wednesday invited Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to tour the Nazi death camps at Auschwitz and called on the leader in Tehran to invite survivors to a planned conference on the subject of the Holocaust in Iran.
Noach Flug, head of the Center of Organizations of Holocaust Survivors in Israel (COHSI) offered to host the Iranian leader as a guest of the organization in Auschwitz.
Tehran is set hold a conference on "the reasons for anti-Semitism in Europe, the Holocaust and Zionism" in December. Flug said that the presence of survivors at the event could facilitate a more serious debate on the issue.

Flug, a survivor of Auschwitz, heads an international organization that includes Jewish and non-Jewish survivors of the Holocaust from Poland, Hungary, France, the U.K. and U.S.
The survivor leader told Ahmadinejad that ever since the Iranian leader took office, the group had been closely monitoring his statements and found him to be a "serial Holocaust denier."
Flug also mentioned Ahmadinejad's letter to German leader Angela Merkel, which claimed that the Holocaust had been fabricated by the allied forces to allow Germany to save face after the war.

Getting free from the prison we've erected around ourselves.

One of the most harrowing pictures I ever saw appeared in Newsweek. The camera caught a glimpse into a life that had, in many senses, vanished before it even began. A child, who could not have been more than three or four years old, was carrying building materials. We would call him a pre-schooler; in today's Sudan, he -- and his parents -- are slaves. He can be purchased by just about anyone; someone looked at him and saw two arms that will grow larger and stronger. It is not likely that they saw a mind or a soul. In the Newsweek interview, the child had no idea of the name of his country or his village. Looking at him from my home in Jerusalem, I mourned for his childhood far more than he did. I silently wished that he would somehow be able to return to himself and learn that he is more than his two strong arms.In the course of our lives, we close doors to higher and deeper selves and sometimes forget that we, too, are more than earners, spenders, and travelers through life. ...   more »

View Article  Rep. Harris: Church-state separation 'a lie'

MIAMI, Florida (AP) -- U.S. Rep. Katherine Harris told a religious journal that separation of church and state is "a lie" and God and the nation's founding fathers did not intend the country be "a nation of secular laws."The Republican candidate for U.S. Senate also said that if Christians are not elected, politicians will "legislate sin," including abortion and gay marriage.Harris made the comments -- which she clarified Saturday -- in the Florida Baptist Witness, the weekly journal of the Florida Baptist State Convention, which interviewed political candidates and asked them about religion and their positions on issues.Separation of church and state is "a lie we have been told," Harris said in the interview, published Thursday, saying separating religion and politics is "wrong because God is the one who chooses our rulers."Electing non-Christians allows 'legislating sin'"If you're not electing Christians, then in essence you are going to legislate sin," Harris said. Her comments drew criticism, including some from fellow Republicans, who called them offensive and not representative of the party.Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Florida, who is Jewish, told the Orlando Sentinel that she was "disgusted" by the comments.Harris' campaign released a statement Saturday saying she had been "speaking to a Christian ...   more »

View Article  Russian Jews Urge Jerusalem to Ban Gay Parade, Warn of Possible Attacks

The Federation of Jewish Communities in Russia (FJCR) calls the Jerusalem authorities to bar gay parade planned for September 21, the eve of the Jewish New Year, Interfax news agency reports.
’We believe sexual manifestation, be it traditional or not, to be inappropriate in any city of the world, while in Jerusalem, the city that is holy also for Judaism, this is a scandalous blasphemy,’ head of the FJCR department of public relations Boruch Gorin told Interfax on Tuesday.
He thinks that the organizers of the so called ’pride parade’ count on an ’effect of indignation and complete shock,’ thus playing on religious feelings, which many people have for Jerusalem.
’The tragic results of the last action’ when an Orthodox Jew attacked its participants with knife is another reason why the city authorities should bar such actions’, Gorin remarked.
’Such provocations could bring about a tragedy, and their consequences are unpredictable. We urge the Holy City’s authorities to revoke their decision permitting pride parade and consider no requests like that in the future,’ he added.
The pride parade organizers explain their choice of date saying that on the one hand it allows the march in the immediate future and ...   more »

View Article  Iran enriching uranium ahead of UN deadline: paper

Iran has begun enriching a new batch of uranium just days ahead of a U.N. deadline for Tehran to suspend atomic fuel work or face possible sanction, The Washington Post reported on Wednesday. The International Atomic Energy Agency, the Vienna-based U.N. nuclear watchdog, plans to disclose Iran's new enrichment work in a report due out on Thursday, the newspaper said, citing officials in Washington and European capitals who have been monitoring Iran's efforts. The newspaper said the officials stressed that Iran's new work involved small quantities of uranium being enriched to an extremely low level that could not be used for nuclear weapons. The U.N. Security Council has given Iran until Thursday to suspend uranium enrichment -- a process which can produce fuel for civilian reactors or material for nuclear bombs -- and has threatened to consider sanctions unless it does so.Iran has said it would not stop its nuclear activities, which it contends is for generating electricity."We've seen no indication that Iran intends to comply with the U.N. Security Council's condition of suspending its nuclear program," Undersecretary of State Nicholas Burns told the Post in an interview."Should it not comply by Thursday, and should the IAEA report confirm Iran's continued efforts to ...   more »

View Article  How NAFTA superhighway is built under radar screen

WASHINGTON – Ask some members of Congress about plans to build a "NAFTA superhighway" connecting Mexico and Canada via the U.S. and you might hear snickers. Some officials will tell you they have seen no "earmarks" for such a plan and question whether it even exists. But the plan does exist and the NAFTA superhighway is being built – under the radar screen. One need look no further than the $286 billion highway bill signed into law earlier this month by President Bush for some of the "earmarks." The measure gave the state of Tennessee more than $111 million to help plan and build Interstate 69, called "one of the most significant transportation projects in the region's history" by the Commercial Appeal. No one in Tennessee has any doubts about plans for the NAFTA superhighway. It is being built now with federal taxpayer dollars. And the plan calls for I-69 to extend from Michigan to Texas, linking the Canadian and Mexican borders. Those supporting the plan, like Transportation Secretary Mario Cino, say it will bring an unprecedented windfall not only to the regions it traverses but for all Americans, Mexicans and Canadians. Tennessee Department of Transportation Commissioner Gerald Nicely said ...   more »
