July 31, 2006 ยท Two-and-a-half years from now, in early 2009, the Census Bureau plans to send an army of 100,000 temporary workers down every street and dusty, dirt road in America. They will be armed with handheld GPS devices.Robert LaMacchia, head of the Census Bureau's geography division, says they'll capture the latitude and longitude of the front door of every house, apartment and improvised shelter they find. "We will actually knock on doors and look for hidden housing units," he says. "We will find converted garages; from the outside, it may not look like anybody lives there." But census workers will add each dwelling, legal or not, to the Census Bureau's Master Address File. Recent proposed budget cuts have put part of this plan in jeopardy. But if Congress restores the money, the census will end up with the geographic coordinates -- accurate to within 10 feet -- for about 110 million residences. But the Census Bureau can't, by law, share that list with anyone, even local governments. LaMacchia says the information has to be treated as confidential. Otherwise, people might lie, and the census wouldn't be accurate. "People would not tell us about hidden housing units," LaMacchia says. ... more »

Wednesday August 16, 2006The Guardian One of the many casualties of the war in Lebanon will almost certainly be the Israeli government's plans to withdraw unilaterally from the West Bank. Ehud Olmert's government has been weakened by intense criticism of its handling of the war and is in no position to force through its controversial "realignment policy" of unilateral withdrawal from Palestinian territory. Hizbullah's unleashing of thousands of rockets from a border strip in Lebanon vacated six years ago by Israeli forces, coming soon after Hamas's use of rockets from the Gaza Strip, has created a political backlash against withdrawal. Mr Olmert's hopes of pursuing his realignment policy appeared to have been delivered a fatal blow yesterday, with the leak of a government-appointed panel's report on its consequences. According to Ha'aretz newspaper, the committee found that a withdrawal would leave cities such as Tel Aviv vulnerable to rocket attacks from the West Bank. "It is well known that as far as public opinion is concerned, unilateral steps are over already," said Avshalom Vilan, a Knesset member from the leftwing Meretz party. "They will not work. There is no majority for them in the Knesset at ... more »

LONDON - The United States should "shut up" with its concerns about China's growing military spending because the increase is no threat, a Chinese ambassador said Thursday. Sha Zukang, China's ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva, told British Broadcasting Corp. radio that American concerns about his country's growing military might were misguided."It's better for the U.S. to shut up," Sha said. "Keep quiet. It's much, much better."Sha said the world need not worry about China's growing economic and military might because "China basically is a peace-loving nation.""China's military buildup is not threatening anyone," Sha said. "This is a legitimate defense."China's 2.3 million-member People's Liberation Army is the world's largest fighting force, and Beijing has alarmed its neighbors with double-digit percentage increases in military spending nearly every year for a decade.U.S.-China military relations have been strained over a number of issues in recent years, including Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld's push for Beijing to be more open about its defense priorities, its military budget and its nuclear arsenal. more »

(VIDEO) Saad Hariri, the son of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik
Hariri, accuses Syrian President Bashar Assad of stirring civil strife
in Lebanon; Jumblatt says Syria backing Hizbullah takeover in Lebanon
Roee Nahmias VIDEO - Saad Hariri, the leader of the main Lebanese parliamentary block and son of slain prime minister Rafik Hariri accused Syrian President Bashar Assad of stirring strife in Lebanon and said "Syria is making a cynical use of the blood of children in the village of Qana, Gaza and Baghdad." After 33 days of bombardments a bomb of a different kind fell on our heads today after Assad's speech," he said. Assad accused Hariri and the 'March 14' anti-Syrian block of collaborating with Israel and the United States in a speech delivered on Tuesday in Damascus. Syrian parliamentarian Faisal Kulthum responded angrily to Hariri's remarks saying he is "a small and stupid agent who is pinning his hope on foreign forces. When the Israeli attack against Lebanon started the agent Hariri was in Europe and now he is claiming to be with the resistance." Kulthum said "Syria created the resistance in the Arab world," he said speaking to al-Jazeera TV. Hariri's coalition ... more »

Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad says his country is prepared for war
with Israel and warned that the Golan Heights would be seized "by
Syrian hands.”
In an interview with the Egyptian publication Al-Usbu after the ceasefire in Lebanon went into effect, Assad declared: "Syria has been prepared and ready since the first day of the war . . . "We and the resistance (Hezbollah) read clearly that the day of confrontation was definitely approaching. The current war is five years old, and there were widespread preparations for this day.” Assad said he is convinced that steps toward peace "have fallen off, and that the Golan will be liberated by Syrian hands.” Asked what the expected results would be if Israel launched an attack against Syria, Assad said: "If Israel acts with adventurism and enters into a war with Syria, this will be the beginning of a heavy price that it will pay.” Assad said Hezbollah’s conflict with Israel marks "a new stage in the history of [the Arab] nation, and he remarked ominously: "To this day no one in American intelligence or Israeli intelligence knows what the true capabilities of the resistance are. The Syrian government daily Al-Thawra claimed Hezbollah ... more » |
