Two Israeli warplanes, German navy vessel clash off Lebanese coast, Defense Ministry in Berlin reports Two Israeli warplanes and a German navy vessel have clashed off the Lebanese coast, the Defense Ministry in Berlin said on Wednesday without giving further details.  
Germany daily Der Tagesspiegel earlier on Wednesday quoted a junior German Defense Ministry official as telling a parliamentary committee that two Israeli F-16 fighters flew low over the German ship and fired two shots.  
The jets also released infra-red countermeasures to ward off any rocket attack, the paper quoted him as saying.The minister did not say when the incident happened or what had caused it, the paper said.
"I can confirm that there was an incident," a ministry spokesman told Reuters on Wednesday. An investigation was underway and he therefore was unable to provide further information, he added. 
An Israeli military spokeswoman said she was checking the report.
Germany assumed command of a United Nations naval force off the coast of Lebanon 10 days ago and has sent a force of eight ships and 1,000 service personnel to join the international peace operation in the region.

Russian president says, ‘police, prosecutors view Lebanon war as defeat and start all these attacks’

Russia's President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday he believed allegations of wrongdoing against Israel's president and prime minister were politically motivated.  
Putin was drawn into the furor around rape allegations against President Moshe Katsav after reporters overheard him joking about the case at a Kremlin meeting last week with Israel's Prime Minister Ehud Olmert.

Prime Minister Olmert received a very welcoming reception from President Putin, but only on the surface      
"It is linked in my view, and in the view of many experts, to the fact that a large part of Israeli society is unhappy with the actions of their leaders in the Lebanon conflict," Putin said in a televised question-and-answer session.  
"Many people see it as a defeat and start all these attacks, through the prosecutors and the police."  
Unaware a microphone was switched on as he began talks with Olmert last week, Putin was overheard by reporters calling Katsav a "mighty guy" and praising his virility.

Middle East experts give their forecasts for the coming months in the region, warn of 'terrible deterioration' on Israel's northern border

The coming months will present Israel with strategic threats from three different directions, Dr. Boaz Ganor, founder of the Institute for Counter-Terrorism told Ynetnews.  The first threat, stemming from the Shiite alliance of Iran and Hizbullah, will result in "terrible deterioration" on Israel's northern border, according to Ganor.  
"The year 2007 is going to be a critical year, as the international arena will do its utmost to narrow down the nuclear capabilities of Iran. It could be done by using more affirmative sanctions, or even a military campaign," Ganor said. "And the ramification of such an attempt, even if it's only sanctions, will cause a terrible deterioration of the situation on the northern border, where Iran will use its proxy Hizbullah to retaliate against Israel, and make clear that Israel has to pay for any activities against Iran," Ganor added.
