MIAMI -- The streets of Miami were buzzing Friday night with rumors of
Cuban dictator Fidel Castro's death.
NBC 6's Tom Llamas was live in Little Havana as crowds celebrating
Castro's alleged death continued to grow.
A large group of Cuban-Americans went to Versailles, the town square in
Little Havana, to find out if Castro was alive or dead.
Llamas said the group arrived just before 10 p.m., waving flags and
screaming. He said it was only a fraction of what will happen when
Castro's death is finally confirmed.
The rumors began on July 31, 2006, when Cuba TV announced Castro had
transferred power to his brother, Raul.
Castro cited intestinal problems as the reason he could no longer run
day-to-day operations in the country.
Medical experts in the U.S. said Castro only had a year to live.
Now, that year has come and gone, and many Cuban-Americans suspect the
dictator has died.
"It's been crazy," Carlos Vega said. "Everywhere you go, that's all
they talk about. Radio stations, everywhere. Everybody's going nuts."
Rumors in the media, on the Internet and on the street say Castro is
dead.
"Somebody that I work with, their husband's in Hialeah, out of all
places," Lazaro Quintino said. "They gave him a call when the rumors
were starting to go around. The funny thing is, just minutes after
that, my wife gave me a call."
Quintino said his cell phone started ringing off the hook around 1 p.m.
Friday. Quintino said they were all asking the same question: Is Castro
really dead?
"A friend of the family that knows somebody that works for the
government told them that Fidel had passed or that he was almost about
to go," Quintino said.
One woman said she heard there were tanks seen in Cuba and funeral
"people" had arrived in Cuba from Russia and Egypt.
Stay with NBC 6 and NBC6.net for the latest updates on Castro's health
status.
