Poll: Americans Sympathize More with Israel than Palestine

BY: Washington Free Beacon Staff

A new poll released Tuesday reveals that Americans sympathize more with Israel than Palestinians and would prefer Iran not acquire a nuclear weapon even if it means military action, according to Pew Research:

The latest national survey by the Pew Research Center, conducted March 13-17 among 1,501 adults, finds that 49 percent say they sympathize more with Israel, while just 12 percent sympathize more with the Palestinians and the same percentage (12 percent) volunteers that they sympathize with neither side.

Americans have consistently sympathized more with Israel since the 1970s. Many Republicans surveyed believe President Barack Obama favors Palestinians too much.

According to the survey, 64 percent of Americans say it is important to stop Iran from developing a nuclear weapon, even if military action is required. This is a sentiment that is shared across the political spectrum, although Republicans favor this view slightly more than Democrats.

Justice Department memo reveals legal case for drone strikes on Americans

By Michael Isikoff
National Investigative Correspondent, NBC News
A confidential Justice Department memo concludes that the U.S. government can order the killing of American citizens if they are believed to be “senior operational leaders” of al-Qaida or “an associated force” — even if there is no intelligence indicating they are engaged in an active plot to attack the U.S.

The 16-page memo, a copy of which was obtained by NBC News, provides new details about the legal reasoning behind one of the Obama administration’s most secretive and controversial polices: its dramatically increased use of drone strikes against al-Qaida suspects, including those aimed at American citizens, such as the September 2011 strike in Yemen that killed alleged al-Qaida operatives Anwar al-Awlaki and Samir Khan. Both were U.S. citizens who had never been indicted by the U.S. government nor charged with any crimes.

Advertise | AdChoicesThe secrecy surrounding such strikes is fast emerging as a central issue in this week’s hearing of White House counterterrorism adviser John Brennan, a key architect of the drone campaign, to be CIA director. Brennan was the first administration official to publicly acknowledge drone strikes in a speech last year, calling them “consistent with the inherent right of self-defense.” In a separate talk at the Northwestern University Law School in March, Attorney General Eric Holder specifically endorsed the constitutionality of targeted killings of Americans, saying they could be justified if government officials determine the target poses “an imminent threat of violent attack.”

Did the wrong McCain school Hagel on the Middle East?

Did the Wrong McCain School Hagel on the Middle East?

The wrong McCain may have had the job of taking Senator Chuck Hagel to school on the Middle East. Senator John McCain earned plenty of headlines for his questioning of Hagel but did he teach Hagel anything about Israel and the Middle East?

Setting aside the question of whether Hagel has the ability to absorb the truths about the neighborhood that Israel lives in, this could have been a teachable moment for Hagel and many Americans who often do not grasp that Israel’s neighbors are not friendly Canadians.

Nazi gun control laws: a familiar road to citizen disarmament?

by Joe Wolverton, II
In an article earlier this month, the online Huffington Post mocked the Drudge Report for posting pictures of Adolf Hitler (shown on right, with Benito Mussolini) and Josef Stalin above the headline: “White House Threatens ‘Executive Orders’ on Guns.”

A Google search using the search term “Obama Hitler Gun Control” delivers nearly six million results.

While such evidence is certainly not scientific, it does reveal an increase in the interest of the role of the disarmament of a citizenry in the development of a fascist regime. If one can identify these milestones on the road to the Third Reich, for example, perhaps similar steps can be avoided in the United States of America.

There are those, of course, who hold to the belief that a reduction in arms is progress. President Obama said as much after his recent meeting with police chiefs regarding local enforcement of forthcoming gun control measures.

Putin: I will sign Bill that bans Americans from adopting Russian children

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin watches an unveiling ceremony of the second leg of the Eastern Siberia – Pacific Ocean (ESPO) oil pipeline during a live video link from the event site in the Far East city of Khabarovsk at Putin’s Novo-Ogaryovo residence outside Moscow on Dec. 25, 2012. Russian President Vladimir Putin said Thursday he will sign a controversial bill that will ban Americans from adopting Russian children.

Parliament’s upper house voted unanimously Wednesday in favor of the measure.

The bill is widely seen as the Kremlin’s retaliation against an American law that calls for sanctions against Russians deemed to be human rights violators. It comes as Putin takes an increasingly confrontational attitude toward the West, brushing aside concerns about a crackdown on dissent and democratic freedoms.

Dozens of Russian children close to being adopted by American families now will almost certainly be blocked from leaving the country. The law also cuts off the main international adoption route for Russian children stuck in often dismal orphanages: Tens of thousands of Russian youngsters have been adopted in the U.S. in the past 20 years. There are about 740,000 children without parental care in Russia, according to UNICEF.

Where European anti-Americanism and anti-semitism meet

By Dr. Manfred Gerstenfeld

“Israeli psychiatrist Zvi Rex was correct in saying that the Germans will never forgive the Jews for Auschwitz. In an analogous manner, I would argue that Western Europeans will also never forgive the Americans for being daily reminders that it was the Americans – together with the Red Army – who defeated Nazism, and not the Europeans themselves.

“Anti-Semitism in Europe goes back a thousand years. Anti-Americanism as a discourse and an ideology emerged more than 200 years ago among European elites. America and Jews are seen by many Europeans as paragons of a modernity they dislike and distrust: money-driven, profit-hungry, urban, universalistic, individualistic, mobile, rootless, inauthentic, and thus hostile to established traditions and values.

Anti-Americanism and anti-Semitism are the only major icons shared by the European extreme left and far right, including neo-Nazis.”

No wonder America’s Founders distrusted standing armies

By Chuck Baldwin

It is well documented that many of America’s Founding Fathers had a very real and deep-seated distrust of standing armies — and for good reason. They had just fought a costly and bloody war for independence, which had been largely predicated upon the propensities for the abuse and misuse of individual liberties by a pervasive and powerful standing army (belonging to Great Britain) amongst them. Listen to Thomas Jefferson: “I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies.” Note that Jefferson identified both banking institutions and standing armies as being “dangerous to our liberties.” James Madison said, “A standing army is one of the greatest mischief that can possibly happen.” Elbridge Gerry (Vice President under James Madison) called standing armies “the bane of liberty.”

For the most part, the sentiments of our founders ring hollow to modern Americans who, ever since World War II, have glorified, idolized, and practically even worshipped the standing US military. But of course, with only isolated instances (which were almost always completely covered up by the mainstream news media) of the abuse of military power being committed against US citizens, the American people, as a whole, have no point of reference directing them to the sagacity of America’s founders on the subject. Indeed, who could even imagine that US military forces would ever be used against the US citizenry? After all, the media did a masterful job of covering up the most flagrant example of US military forces being used against US citizens when US military forces assisted federal law enforcement agencies in slaughtering the Branch Davidians outside Waco, Texas, on April 19, 1993. So, most Americans simply shut their eyes against that “painful truth” and chose to ignore the fact that it even happened.

Russia May Target Missile Defense Sites

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev meets with local media in Rostov-on-Don, Russia.

MOSCOW – Russia will deploy new missiles aimed at U.S. missile defense sites in Europe if Washington goes ahead with the planned shield despite Russia’s concerns, President Dmitry Medvedev said Wednesday.

Russia will station missiles in its westernmost Kaliningrad region and other areas if Russia and NATO fail to reach a deal on the U.S.-led missile defense plans, he said in a tough statement that seemed to be aimed at rallying domestic support.

Russia considers the plans for missile shields in Europe, including in Romania and Poland, to be a threat to its nuclear forces, but the Obama administration insists they are meant to fend off a potential threat from Iran.

Moscow has agreed to consider NATO’s proposal last fall to cooperate on the missile shield, but the talks have been deadlocked over how the system should operate. Russia has insisted that the system should be run jointly, which NATO has rejected.

Medvedev also warned that Moscow may opt out of the New START arms control deal with the United States and halt other arms control talks if the U.S. proceeds. The Americans had hoped that the treaty would stimulate progress further ambitious arms control efforts, but such talks have stalled over tension on the missile plans.

“The United States and its NATO partners as of now aren’t going to take our concerns about the European missile defense into account,” a stern Medvedev said, adding that if the alliance continues to “stonewall” Russia it will take retaliatory action.

U.S. Supreme Court hears case to list ‘Jerusalem, Israel’ on foreign passports

Longstanding U.S. policy does not list Jerusalem as capital of Israel, says status of the city that is important to Jews, Muslims and Christians should be resolved in negotiations. By The Associated Press

The Supreme Court is hearing arguments in a Jerusalem-born boy’s challenge to U.S. State Department policy that prevents him from having his passport show he was born in Israel.

Middle Eastern politics and the battle between Congress and the president over foreign policy are at play in the case being argued at the high court Monday. The boy, Menachem Zivotofsky, and his parents, Naomi and Ari, flew in from Israel to attend Monday’s Supreme Court arguments.

The Obama administration, like its Republican and Democratic predecessors, says it does not want to stir up anger in the Arab world by appearing to take a position on the ultimate fate of Jerusalem. Longstanding U.S. policy says the status of the city that is important to Jews, Muslims and Christians should be resolved in negotiations.

But lawyers for 9-year-old Menachem argue that the foreign policy concerns are trivial. Thirty-nine lawmakers from both parties are siding with the boy and his parents, defending a provision in a 2002 law that allows Israel to be listed as the birthplace for Americans born in Jerusalem.

Americans and Israel soldiers are now training together

A company of US Marines was in Israel last month for joint urban warfare training sessions with Israeli soldiers.

Most of the exercises took place at the IDF’s state-of-the-art Urban Warfare Training Center at the Tze’elim army base in southern Israel.

The Americans had traveled to Israel from their base in Europe. Speaking to the IDF Spokesperson about the experience, Platoon Sgt. Robert Hattenbach said, “We’ve never been to a mock town like that of the IDF.”

A number of the Marines reportedly spoke positively about the size and realistic feel of the IDF training facility.

The IDF’s Urban Warare Training Center has been used repeatedly by the US military to train soldiers preparing to deploy in Iraq and Afghanistan, where urban warfare againt insurgent forces in the norm.
